OH MY WORD. It has been far too long since I’ve posted on this blog and far too long since I’ve been writing (Other than frivolous personal articles and Warhammer 40K romance books.. sigh).
If you’ve been following me (which if you are NOT, you should be!), you will know that I recently got MARRIED! Yes! That’s right… me the wedding photographer, finally tied the knot! I thought I would have a wedding that was tiny and budget friendly, until my husband and I could do a bigger wedding next year in Michigan. I thought I had everything under control, that planning was going to be EASY. Boy was I wrong. Having been a wedding photographer for almost 18 years I really believed I was going to minimize the stress that I had always seen written across every bride and groom’s face as they approached their special day and that everything was going to be just flawless. Sincerely, I applaud all brides and grooms and wedding planners alike as I only got a TINY snippet of what you all go through, and let me tell you… even with the tiniest wedding in the world, there is just so much to think about and do.
Planning a wedding is not an easy or stress-free task, however much you want to convince yourself that it is. Therefore I have put together a comprehensive list in ONE place, of all of the best vendors/venues in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan that are wedding related! Let it be known that I will highly recommend MYSELF and no one else for your wedding photographer, because why would I do anything else. 😉

WEDDING VENUES IN SASKATOON & AREA
Choosing a wedding venue is so important! Not only is it the place where you will celebrate with family and friends, but it may also be the spot where you say your vows! A few things to keep in mind with venues in regards to getting those perfect photos:
-Look for a venue with a light and bright feel! This will help capture those moments you want to cherish in such a clean and harmonious way and your photographer will thank you for it!
-Choose a venue that has a kick A$$ wedding coordinator, that is there for you with any questions you have and that is on the same page as you!
-If you’ve chosen a darker venue with high ceilings, PLEASE consider placing some spotlights or extra lighting in spots where you know a lot of photos will be taken. Truly this will help maximize your wedding photographers skills and highlight every detail of your reception in the best way possible. If you have a DJ that you have hired, ask if they provide dance lighting or mood lighting as well*
-Choose a venue that is YOUR style! Or at least, one that is willing to conform to your style. Having creative freedom in your venue is so important, so that you can make your room look exactly how you want it to!

On to the next… flowers! I absolutely love nothing more than seeing beautiful floral arrangements that compliment every aspect of a beautiful day! There are so many amazing florists in Saskatoon and I am sure that I have had weddings with bouquets from almost any one of these vendors!
The best advice I can give, is to make sure you give a detailed list of flowers you LOVE, flowers you absolutely do NOT want in your bouquet and plenty of inspirational photos to show your florist (hello hours of pointless scrolling through Pinterest!). Be very clear on the colors you you want and the look and feel of your wedding! This will all help your florist create the best bouquet for you!
If you choose to venture out and make your own bouquets, places like Safeway and Costco are definitely the top choices for affordable and beautiful flowers with a bigger variety. A tip is to stand in front of a mirror while you are arranging your bouquets and making sure you snip the flowers at a manageable length for holding throughout the day. There are also some farms I have listed here that have U-Pick options if you are looking for something more natural looking!

So where are we heading to next? Well, is there anything more stressful and wonderful than wedding dress shopping? I will admit, I sidestepped all of the drama and ordered my wedding dress from Shein and I was pretty darned happy with it. I won’t lie, I wanted to avoid all the stores and trying things on like the plague, and boy was I lucky to get such a beautiful dress for such an affordable price!
NOW, this is a difficult list to make, because if I’m being honest… the number one complaint I hear from brides in my 18 years of wedding photography is that they were unhappy with their dress, or the customer service of their dress company or the panic they felt when they had to wait an ungodly amount of time for their dress to come back to them. So I caution all brides to check shipping times/policy and feel comfortable about the timeline of the dress, leaving you enough time to make any alterations. When trying on the dress, my top tips would be to check the dress from ALL angles for any back fat coming out, or any uncomfortable skin situations, whether or not the dress requires a bra or not, if you can sit down comfortably in the dress without it making you look like a stuffed sausage, if it’s easy to move in and most of all…. if it makes you feel like the beautiful goddess that you are!
A couple of other options if you are trying to stay budget friendly, is to check out good old Facebook Marketplace for gently used wedding dresses that you can either take home right away fitting like a glove or make alterations to. If you are like me and love the vintage look, consider checking out Value Village or Salvation Army or any thrift shop for vintage and used wedding dresses. They DO often have newer wedding dresses come in as well. Alterations can ALWAYS be made! These are some of the most unique and beautiful dresses I have seen. If you are the sentimental-type, you can choose to alter your mom’s wedding dress or grandmother’s wedding dress to fit you perfectly and make it into something you love! There is also the affordable option of ordering from Shein, just make sure you read through reviews and seek out the reviews with photos of REAL people wearing the dress and weigh all your pros and cons!

This brings me to the wonderful world of catering… because when you’re wearing a tightly fitted dress, there is nothing more you want to do then eat a big lavish meal, am I right!? Kidding of course, but food is wonderful and by that time of the day, you are going to be hungry! I am one of those people that truly believes good food connects family and friends in such a wonderful way, and a good meal is always something that guests and family will remember!
Now, catering companies are amazing and if you can sidestep all of that by having a delicious meal served up by the venue of your choosing, that is even more wonderful, so definitely be sure you are able to get a sample meal at the venue offering a meal so you can decide if this is something you want as a package deal. If not, there are some great catering companies in Saskatoon! A lot of venues have their own kitchens and the option of having your own catering brought in so this is definitely going to be a big part of your day. I have seen people do their own wedding meals with crockpots full of delicious slow cooked meats for a huge taco meal or cabbage rolls and perogies that grandma generously spent hours slaving away on, BUT if you wanted to take some of the stress out of it, a good caterer is the way to go!
To note, that for late lunches and snacks, Charcuterie boards are always an option, and don’t discount the deliciousness of pizza or McDonalds or Subway catering as a tasty snack, but do make sure you call well ahead of time to let them know the sheer volume of the order you will be placing.
If you are having a smaller more intimate backyard wedding, BBQing some delicious steaks or chicken from Costco is always a good way to go as well, there are some small companies offering smaller group catering that would be able to help you out with this as well!

That brings me to the wedding commissioner category and possibly the most important one! A wedding commissioner that you adore will absolutely make your day complete. Whether you are writing your own vows, or want to have them written for you, having a good wedding commissioner who can make those words come to life is so important! Not only that, they are arguably the most important person you can hire for your wedding since their signature is the difference between you being married or not.
